Prosim Hip Wear Simulator

Designed and developed in response to the growing demand for ever more aggressive adverse testing hip implants.

The Hip Implant Wear Simulator

Working together with CRITT-MDTR, the independent French wear testing house, the Prosim Hip Wear Simulator was developed with a number of key objectives in mind:

  • Design and build a simulator that fully meets the requirements of both ISO 14242-1 (2014) and ISO 14242-4 (2018)
  • Capable of going well beyond existing ISO requirements for adverse wear testing
  • Strictly follows anatomical loading, applied through the acetabular cup (hips)
  • Strictly follows anatomical movement, applied through the femoral head (hips)
  • Delivers precise, accurate and repeatable microseparation (hips)

Peltier Heater/Cooler system

We have recently introduced the Peltier Heater/Cooler system (section 2.8) which automatically maintains the test fluid media (serum) temperature at 37°C ±2°C, replacing the old heater and pump system circulating the test fluid media externally. As a result, we help the customer to achieve a huge saving on the cost of serum, as only 1/3 of the serum volume is required on a self-contained Peltier heater unit in contrast to the pump + heater system.

The Prosim Hip Implant Wear Simulator is a multi-station machine designed for the reliable and repeatable testing of both hip and spinal implants, providing designers and developers of replacement hip joints and intervertebral discs with a cost-effective and accurate means of generating wear and friction data under realistic in-vivo simulated conditions.

All axes of the Prosim Hip Wear Simulator are electromechanically driven, using a combination of motors, drives and gearboxes. This enables the simulator very closely follow any demand waveform however demanding it may be.

Empirical data generated by our simulators over the last fifteen years supports the assertion that the patterns of wear of hip implants tested in Prosim Hip Implant Wear Simulators accurately mirrors that of the wear of implants extracted from humans after years of use.

The Prosim Hip Wear Simulator enables up to six implants to be tested simultaneously plus two implants to be load soaked, to produce an accurate emulation of in-vivo hip joint movement and wear.

The Prosim Hip Wear Simulator includes numerous features and benefits:

  • 4/5 electromechanically driven axes with independent controlled Axial loading
  • Fully meets the requirements of both ISO 14242-1 (2014) and ISO 14242-4 (2018)
  • Capable of going well beyond existing ISO requirements for adverse wear testing
  • Strictly follows anatomical loading applied through the acetabular cup (hips) and anatomical movement applied through the femoral head (hips)
  • Delivers precise, accurate and repeatable edge loading (microseparation) and impingement test.
  • Peltier temperature control system that maintains the test fluid media at the temperature of 37°C ±2°C
